Unemployment Claims Process
     
   Simplified.... Electronic.... Faster
 Electronic filing is a faster, more
 efficient way to process multiple
 claims for unemployment
 insurance.  The electronic system
 can be utilized during temporary
 multiple layoffs of one or two
 weeks, such as a regularly
 scheduled vacation shutdown.

If you are an employer and interested in finding out how you can take advantage of electronic filing you may contact the nearest Local Department for Employment Services (DES) Office.  A printable copy of the electronics claims procedures provides you with an overview of the  process. 


Eligible Employers Must:

" " Have a workforce of 50 or more workers
" " Experience scheduled and unscheduled temporary layoffs or plant shutdowns


Electronic Filing:

" " Is compatible with the electronic media employers already have established
" " Eliminates paperwork by electronically tracking the claims
" " Eliminates employer reconciliation of claimant earnings such as 
holiday/vacation pay
" " Ensures employers' lowest possible unemployment tax rate by eliminating errors in earnings offset reporting
" " Eliminates employees from standing in long lines in the DES offices
" " Eliminates disruption of employer operations by DES staff being on 
site to take claims


Advantages Over the Regular System:

" " The filing process is streamlined, eliminating computer-generated notices that were mailed to employers under the regular system.
" " Employers have the options of keeping track of claim filers through electronic communications between the employer and the agency.
" " Employers may opt to have wages employees earned during the layoff automatically deducted from the employees' unemployment checks.
" " Employers who pay supplemental unemployment benefits for layoffs have the option to receive electronic data from the agency to determine the correct amount of payment.
" " Employees are provided a simple, direct way to apply for benefits.
" " The claims are processed faster, and the employee receives his/her benefit check sooner.
